How does a person get started in woodworking? It’s a basic question, but there is no simple answer. Although their responses differ, most seasoned woodworkers advise getting started with books, classes, and/or basic tools.

After perusing the topic on woodworking.com, I found that one common answer to the question of how to start is with books. Many people recommended building a library, starting with easy woodworking books on basic techniques. These will give you beginner projects, safety practices, and the proper use of tools. After learning the basics of woodworking, you can move on to more advanced woodworking books that concentrate on areas that interest you.

Others advise starting with woodworking classes at a local community college or at a high school adult education program. They are usually cheap and sometimes even free and will give you hands-on experience and a solid foundation in safety. They will also allow you to judge how far you want to go with woodworking and what direction you want to take.

Many mentioned the subject of amassing tools, but the advised approaches varied. Some advocated starting with a table saw because of its versatility while others recommended starting with projects that only require hand tools and moving on to power tools later. I read some advice to those with no experience to begin with precut wood projects that only need assembly with basic hand tools. One poster recommends beginning by whittling with a lock blade pocketknife to learn about the dangers of working with sharp equipment and the differences in wood types. Some of the best advice I gleaned about the use of tools is to buy them as needed. Many posters said that you should buy the tools for a particular project, and keep buying more as you need them for more advanced projects. Then you will have all the tools you need eventually. No one advocates buying the cheapest tools. Some say to start with “middle of the road” quality tools; others advise only to buy the best.

Depending on what advice you take, your first investment in woodworking will probably be in books, classes, or tools. There is no single answer, but all experienced woodworkers agree it is a rewarding and worthwhile effort.
