Try a Workbench For Your First Woodwork Project
Many people enjoy easy woodworking as a rewarding hobby or profession. But to get started on the right foot, you must consider your workspace first. In planning a woodworking area, there are many factors to consider, including whether you want to buy a workbench or construct your own.
The first thing to consider is where your woodshop will be. Most people choose a garage or basement. Wherever it is, it must be roomy enough to fit your materials such as plywood and finished projects. There must also be electrical outlets for all the power tools. Since these can be very noisy, you will want to consider whether the location is good for your neighbors. Good lighting is also important.
It should also be a place that can be well organized. You don’t want a cluttered mess in your workshop. It’s always good to have a place to keep all your power tools, such as on pegs above your workbench or in drawers below it. It’s also a good idea to have cans to keep loose screws and nails in. Finally, you will want to have hanging clipboards on which to put your plans and patterns for projects you are working on.
The most essential part of your woodshop will be your workbench. It should have a smooth surface of either wood or other material that will not scuff the wood on your projects. When considering the size of the workbench, you will need to consider the size of the projects you will be doing. Furniture construction requires a much larger workspace than toys or picture frames.
You can find a pre-made workbench in many hardware stores, but you should consider making your own as your first project. It will give you good experience and you will create something for which you will have a lot of use. Many free workbench plans can be found on the internet. You should find one that suits your needs and skill level.
Anyone should consider building their own workbench as part of their preparation for a woodworking shop. It would be a great woodwork project with which to get your woodworking hobby started.
